    I know these are stupid and repetitive questions. Slap me when I start sounding like a stooge.

    Is it acceptable to drill the axles and pin the axle outside of the axle nut, rather than drilling the nut itself?

    You're nowhere near the "get smacked" level.  :)

    It is absolutely allowable as long as a slightly loose nut can't cause a problem.  A better alternative might be to find a "castellated nut" of the appropriate thread and drill through the axle for a pin so that the nut can't back.  Ed will ask you to safety wire the open end of the pin so it can't fall out, but that's no big deal.

    Half of the purpose of safety wire is to be sure critical fasteners are properly tightened to begin with.  It is assumed that nobody would take the time to wire a fastener that hasn't been tightened. Whether or not that's a valid assumption is another question.........

    Scott,

    Thanks. That was exactly the feedback that Ed gave me. I wrote down all the places and techniques to wire up, including the end of the axle pin, so I will have that sorted before the first race.

    Not sure what thread is used on the CBR, but I was at Ace Hardware at Golf Course and Paseo last night and they have castellated nuts in metric threads up to M16.  ProBolt has an M18x1.5 version, so you'd want to check before your order what the thread is on your axle.

    A quick check of the WERA boards shows a few folks who race CBR250Rs doing exactly as you described in your initial post, though.  Drill outside the nut and pin it.  That's the cheapest version.

    You can also make a "castleagated" nut by cutting slots in the outside edge of the standard axle nut.  Just sayin'
