You're nowhere near the "get smacked" level. :)
It is absolutely allowable as long as a slightly loose nut can't cause a problem. A better alternative might be to find a "castellated nut" of the appropriate thread and drill through the axle for a pin so that the nut can't back. Ed will ask you to safety wire the open end of the pin so it can't fall out, but that's no big deal.
Half of the purpose of safety wire is to be sure critical fasteners are properly tightened to begin with. It is assumed that nobody would take the time to wire a fastener that hasn't been tightened. Whether or not that's a valid assumption is another question.........
